Embracing the Overcoming Attitude

Attitude is not just a mere outlook of life, but a deep-rooted philosophy of the mind. Your attitude is the prototype of your belief system. You behave the way you do, not because you just feel like it, but because it’s been authorised by your belief system.

Human belief system is an encrypted data-base of thoughts, beliefs, traditions, comments and experiences that have been accepted by the mind as legitimate codes for living. They’ve been filtered into the subconscious mind and have basically become persuasions. Unfortunately, these humans persuasions are also built upon the inherent human sinful desires which have been passed down from Adam and Eve (Romans 3:23), therefore making the intrinsic human inclination to be dominated by sheer evil (Genesis 6:5). But thanks be to God who gave us the victory through our lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:55-57).

Having been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, it becomes our responsibility to continue to sanctify our minds by the word of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. At new birth, your spirit was regenerated by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5), but your mind was still a custodian of your old belief system. That is why your old way of thinking has to be replaced by the new scriptural thoughts. The old belief system must be neutralised and replaced by the new belief system of the word of God, thereby creating for you the overcoming attitude.

Salvation is often a onetime experience, but sanctification is a process that lasts a life time. The bible says, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2). The renewing of the mind is simply to replace your formal thoughts, beliefs, traditions and philosophies with God’s thoughts, beliefs, traditions, and philosophies.

Jesus died and rose to set us free from the power of sin and has instructed us to change our attitude by changing the way we think. In Romans 8:5-6, the bible says, “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.” The sinful nature is the mind-set that is contrary to the word of God while the Holy Spirit is the source of the mind-set of the will of God.

Therefore, the renewing of the mind is the key to building a healthy believe system. When you begin to shift your affections toward the word of God, your old ties with the world begins to diminish. The bible says in 1 John 2:15-17 that, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” The attitude of the world is revealed by its lusts; but the attitude of God is hidden in His Word. The word of God is the only source of divine attributes. It is by reading and meditating through the power of the Holy Spirit that we build overcoming attitude.

Your victory in life depends on your attitude.  But until your belief system is transformed through the word of God, it continues to produce a defeating attitude. It is therefore vital to prioritise studying and listening to the Word of God. Pour the living Word into your mind daily until the attitude of your mind becomes that of Christ Jesus. The manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit is a proof of a renewed mind (Galatians 5:22-23). As you feed the Word into your Spirit, ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His fruit.  Your joy, prosperity and fulfilment in life will be decided by your willingness to swap your thoughts and attitude with God’s thoughts and attitude. Embrace today the attitude of the Spirit, which is the attitude that overcomes (Philippians 2:5).

Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians 4:22-24
