Four Keys to Overcoming Bitterness (R.E.S.T)

 1. Recognise the cause of your bitterness and why it is important to forgive (Hebrews 12:15). The entirety of my writing on “Rising Above Bitterness” does not only provide you the understanding of some of the causes of bitterness, it also highlights the reasons why forgiveness is crucial to your recovery.

2. Embrace forgiveness. It is, first of all, important that you embrace the forgiveness of God regarding your life (Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 9:13). When you have experienced God’s forgiveness, it becomes easier to become merciful

towards your fellow humans through the help of the Holy Spirit.

3. Saturate your mind and emotions with the word of God (Psalm 147:3; Psalm 103:3-4; Psalm 30:2; Job 33:28). The word of God will purify your heart and destroy every seed of bitterness in your heart. The word of God heals, strengthens, builds up and empowers (Psalm 119:92; Psalm 119:50).

4. Talk about your decision. When you share the testimony of your transformation, you display your confidence in God, and therefore seal your victory (Revelation 12:11; 2 Corinthians 4:13). Also, it may be helpful to talk about your decision to forgive with the person or people who wronged you, if it is possible. The undeserved love they receive from your forgiveness could lead them to know the Lord Jesus (Please seek Godly counsel regarding this).

As you consider these practical steps, you will inevitably rise above bitterness, and the peace of the lord which surpasses knowledge will guard your heart and your mind. (Philippians 4:7). Then, the energy, motivation and courage to achieve your goals and fulfil your dreams in life will be unleashed in your heart by the power of the Holy Spirit.
