The Law And The Life

(Part of “the law of liberty” series. Truth #4 “7 Truths about James 1:25)

Text: James 1:25 – The bible is a book about laws.

What is Law? A Law is a definite commandment laid down by any recognized authority.

The laws of God are the expressed will to God, and they are perfect and lovely all together. Psalm 19:7-11.

Another word for Law is covenant or agreement. Therefore, the bible is a book about covenant – covenant between God and Man. Remember, it takes two to work a covenant. One person cannot work a covenant. Both parties involved in a covenant must fulfil their part in order to release the dividends or the rewards of the covenant. That is why God does nothing on the earth without man’s involvement. He cannot even save you until you agree with Him. It takes two to work a covenant.

The bible is a book bout about laws – covenant – agreement. That is why we have the Old Testament, which simply is the old covenant, law or agreement between the creator and man. Also, we have the New Testament which signifies the new agreement, covenant or Law between God and His creations.

The bible is full of laws. For example, we have laws of Nature, such as the law of the seedtime and harvest, the law of gravity. We also have Divine Laws of life such as the law of the Spirit of life – Romans 8:2, The law of faith – Romans 3:7, the law of adaptation, the law of agreement, the law kindness, the law of order, the law eventuality, the law of focus, the law of protocol, the law of servant hood, the law of the seed, just to mention a few.

The entire universe is governed and sustained by the laws of God. The law that you know and obey decides the rewards you have access to on the earth. The covenant you know and work determine the favour you attract. The depth of your knowledge of God is always proportionate to your exploits and fulfilment (Daniel 11:32). Until you master the divine laws of life, you cannot master life.

Let’s quickly look at few things about laws today:

The OT – The Laws of Moses: the civil, the ceremonial, and the moral law.

The civil laws were for the government of the Jews as a nation. It includes the Ten Commandments. Although, These Laws were originally customised for the Jews, it has significantly influenced national legislations in many countries of the world in later years. Its moral, humane, and just spirit have characterized much code of human laws.

The ceremonial or ritual laws concerned the Hebrew nation’s forms of worship, sacrifices, priests, purifications, etc.  These laws were designed to distinguish the Jewish nation from the rest of the nations around them who did not know God, and to foreshadow or indicate what would happen in the dispensation of the gospel. These laws had been annulled by Jesus Christ through His blood. The ceremonial laws were forever fulfilled by the blood of Christ Jesus. Gen 3:24; Eph 2:15; Heb 9:1-28. Jesus became the sacrificial lamb and paid for our sins once and for all.

The moral law, De 5:7-21. The Moral Law was the revealed will of God regarding human conduct. The moral law was important because of its significant effect on human salvation. God Himself wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to Moses at Mount Sinai. . It was written by God, the Almighty on the conscience of man.  When Christ came, He fulfilled the law and released us from its curse (Colossians 3:130).

Although it is a divine expectation that we still honour this law, we are not under it, as a covenant of works to earn our righteousness. We are now under a different covenant – the covenant of grace through the blood of Jesus. Christ fulfilled this law on our behalves so that we could become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Jesus said in Matt 5:17-18, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”  Luke 10:25-29 (an expert in the law tested Jesus)

The NT – The law of Christ

“For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must also be a change of the law.” (Hebrews 7:12)

Jesus, who is our High Priest, having fulfilled the old covenant, entered into a new covenant relationship with man by His blood and gave us a new commandment (John 13:34).

The entire Moral Laws (The Ten Commandments) were summed up by Christ in loving God absolutely, and our neighbour as ourselves. Matthew 22:37-40; Romans 13:8

The gospel has two parts; the gospel contains two forces: the person of Jesus and His principles – one is the life of God, and one is The Laws of God (the Bible).  One is the experience with Christ; the other is the expertise of Christ. Now, The Person of Christ prepares you for Eternity; His principles prepare you for earth. The person of Jesus creates your peace; His principles create your prosperity. The life of God guarantees your eternity, but His laws decide your prosperity – your fulfilment, the soundness of your mind, you influence in the world, your health, your healing, and your favour – the overall richness of your life.

That is why I titled today’s sermon as “The Law and the Life” – the laws of God around you and the life of God in you. Although both the Laws (the word of God) and the life are Christ Jesus, they accomplish different goals in our lives. John 1:1-3; John 14:6

Your reactions to the laws of God determine your favours and miracles. That is why few people receive everything that God has given to them. Many of us only receive what we are capable of receiving. We only receive in proportion to our knowledge of Him. The laws that you master and apply are the laws you enjoy their benefits. For example, some have mastered the laws of healing, while some have mastered the laws of prosperity.

The dominant purpose of laws is to create order.

What is order? Order is the accurate arrangement of things.

Now, God’s only passion or obsession is order. (Isaiah 9:6-7). For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”

God loves worship, but that is not His obsession. If God’s only obsession is worship, everything he created will sing and worship forever. God loves soul winning. His desire is that everyone is saved ( 2 Peter 3:8-9),  but that is not His passion. If God’s obsession is soul winning, all the evangelists will live forever.

God’s only passion is order. The bible is a book about order. Consider the universe. Everything was designed by divine standards – the human brain and entire body, the oxygen, the distance of the earth to the Sun. the beauty of the universe.

The dominant purpose of order is protection – safety.

For example the purpose of traffic laws is order. And if everyone obeys them, there is safety. The dominant purpose of order is protection. Halleluiah!

Order creates safety. For example, your nose is not on top of your head for a reason. God is a God of order. The main purpose of order is to remove pain and create pleasure. Order creates safety. Order protects. Disorder births pain. Pain is a proof of disorder. Sickness, disease, poverty, poor self-esteem, depression, anxiety, hopelessness are all disorders. They all defy divine intentions for man (1 john 3:8).

Now, God wanted to preserve the Hebrew nation that is why He gave them the Laws. Laws create boundaries. It provides focus.  It rescued from destructions (Gal 3:23). Proverbs 29:18; Deuteronomy 5:28-29

God sent Jesus to restore human disorder caused by sin. He also left us His laws (John 14:15), the bible, for the purpose of maintaining order throughout our lives. Christ came to restore our eternal order through His blood. Before His departure from the earth after the resurrection, He commanded us to preach the gospel and teach the world to observe everything He has commanded us (Matthew 28:19-20). In John 16:13, He promised the Holy Spirit who would guide us and lead us to the truth so that we can perpetuate divine order in our lives.

Order removes pain. Order generates instant pleasure. Order increases productivity. Order creates comfort. Order creates beauty. Disorder distracts. The joy in your life is proportionate to the order you nourish and develop in your life. The bible is a book about order. Your obedience to the laws of God creates perpetual order in your life. Every instruction of God is designed to increase order in your life and destroy pain. When you obey divine instructions, which is simple divine laws, you document your love for God – remember that that is how God measures your love for Him (John 14:15, John 15:10, 1 John 5:3) – then God showers His favour unto you. When you show Honour to His laws, you schedule favour, and where there is favour there is increase

Isaiah 8:20-22To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. 21 They will pass through it hard pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and curse their king and their God, and look upward. 22 Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness”

Exodus 19:5Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.”

Titus 2:11- 14“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

The bible is a book about Laws. The dominant purpose of laws is order. The  intention of order is to birth a pleasurable chapter and diminish pain. Obedience is the key to divine favour. Obedience is a proof of love. When you obey the laws of God, his instructions, you birth favour with God. And when God shower His favour upon you, you can be lifted from the pit to the palace like Joseph.

“This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome…” (1 John 5:3)
